WWII Distinguished Service Medal (DSM) group, awarded to Sailor Stanley Sutherland comprising DSM, Defence medal together with Star medals 1939 - 45, Africa and Atlantic complete with the matching set of miniature medals, continuous Certificate of Discharge and a hardback copy of Touching the Adventures of Merchantmen in the Second World War. Attention is drawn to page 140, Blockade Runner - Stanley Sutherland D.S.M, which details events from SS Paracombe, the ship on which Stanley Sutherland and his brother Jimmy served. Remarkably both were awarded the DSM and details of Stanley's medal listing are in the National Archives, Kew. D.O.B 01 March 1918 ref number BT 395/1/94339, discharge number R.204069
Footnote from Stanley Sutherland's son: "I should point out that my father's DSM is unique as my dad and his half brother Jimmy who were on the same ship (SS Parracombe) running the blockade into Malta during the 2nd world war were the first British merchant seaman to be awarded a distinguished service medal as it was normally only awarded to the military"
