'BRUNSWICK' HULK (CHATHAM) P.O.W.'s LETTER TO VERDUN CAMP WITH REPLY & TRANSPORT OFFICE OVAL; Unusual 24 April 1813 letter (no outgoing wrapper) from POW 'Conscience' on the Prison Hulk 'Brunswick' off Chatham to a "M. Gorder" apparently in charge of prisoner exchanges in Verdun POW Camp. M. Gorder replied to Conscience "Prisonnier de guerre a Bord du Brunswick a Chatham Angleterre" using the blank back of the letter to write both address and his reply (on the flaps of is letter after sealing it!) and so there is a mainly very fine triple-oval "TRANSPORT OFFICE/[Crown]/G.R/PRISONERS OF WAR" on the front with odd "7½" charge. M. Gorder's reply reads; "...He very much regrets that he could not accept at this time the obliging offer of a change of prison made at his instance by the Commissaires of the Transport Board. If he can arrange it now, Monr. Gorder urges him to communicate their wishes, or to write to his friend Monr. Charles Sevright, F. Freeling Esqr., General Post Office. It is this gentleman who made the request on behalf of Monsr. Gorden. Mosr. G. Desires it all the more so that Monsr. C. can take advantage of it; he is convinced that a calm and regular behaviour in his new position will eventually lead to better treatment. Verdun 26th August 1813." Intriguing; worthy of further research! [This cover not recorded by Renollaud, though other Conscience letters are.] [With 2015 Roumet cert.]Cross Reference: MILITARY - P.O.W.
