A GOOD CARVED WOODEN ARCHITECTURAL PANEL DEPICTING A HINDU COW-HEADED GODDESS,
18TH OR EARLY 19TH CENTURY
in an animated pose playing a sitar, a large floral garland draped around her with an ornate headdress and earrings;
54 x 20 x 10 cms

PROVENANCE: Angela Trueb (nee Clement-Davies) Collection

NOTE: The cow is considered sacred in the Hindu religion. Hindus believe that each cow contains 330 million gods and goddesses. The reverence of cows is tied in with the Hindu precept of “ahimsa”, the belief that it is a sin to harm any living creature because all life forms are seen as manifestations of the unity of God.
