The following three lots relate to the WWI German U-boat fleet surrender at Harwich, November 1918 to April 1919. A lacquered brass and bakelite handled magnifying glass inscribed 'UB 25. Surrendered at Harwich 2nd December 1918': also numbered '483' to bezel, 29cm long. * Notes- After the signing of the Armistice at the end of WWI, the German fleet began to cross the Channel and surrender. As the only natural deep water harbour between the Thames and the Humber, Harwich was chosen for the surrendering fleet of over 150 U-Boats and other vessels to be secured. Rear Admiral R Tyrwhitt ruled that there should be 'no communication whatsoever' with the German sailors who were transferred straight onto transport ships and returned home leaving the vessels in what became known as 'U Boat valley' *Notes UB 25 was launched on the 22nd November 1915 and commissioned on the 11th December 1915 under the command of Hans Nieland. She was broken up in Canning Town in 1922
