A Continental carved, gilt and polychrome wood model of Saint Paul the Apostle, probably south German or Italian, early 18th century; portrayed standing contrapposto and heavily draped, a book in his left hand; on an integrally carved rectangular base; 68cm high Note: St Paul is usually portrayed with a sword in his right hand -in this case the right forearm is missing. Cf Christie's London, The Barbara Piasecka Johnson Collection, 17th July 2014, lot 1045, for a highly comparable example. Similarities in the treatment of the drapery, particularly the knot at the shoulder are noteworthy Provenance: Purchased in these Rooms, Fine Art Sale, 31st January 2013, lot 731
