1856 National Department of Science and Art silver prize medal awarded to Mary E. Butler (Eimer 1511). Obverse: left-facing diademed portrait of Queen Victoria after William Wyon, 'VICTORIA BY THE GRACE OF GOD QVEEN' around with 'MDCCCLVI' (1856) below. Reverse: reads 'NATIONAL MEDAL FOR SVCCESS IN ART AWARDED BY THE SCIENCE AND ART DEPARTMENT'. Edge: plain. Weight: 93.50g. Packaging: contemporary box with 'SCIENCE AND ART DEPARTMENT' in gold on the lid. Possibly associated with Mary E. Butler (1845-1937), a watercolour painter and woodcut artist. These medals were awarded for several years from 1856.
