1970 Bond Equipe mark II convertible, overdrive. 1998 cc. Registration number, see text, chassis number DVLASWA 3971704102. Engine number HC11343E.
The Bond car company was started in 1949 by Lawrence Bond, in Preston, Lancashire with a three wheeler, the Mark A, powered by a Villiers two-stroke; production finally ceased with the Mark G in December 1966. The Bond Equipe was introduced in 1963, with the GT, followed by the GTS; the engine and chassis were taken from the Triumph Spitfire and Herald range whilst the main body parts were made in glass fibre by Bond.
In 1967 the Mark I, 2 Litre GT Sports Saloon was introduced with a completely new, restyled two-door with fastback bodywork mounted on the Vitesse chassis and powered by the 1998cc, 95 b.h.p. six cylinder engine using an all-synchromesh, four-speed gearbox. The following year the mark II saloon and convertible were introduced; the convertible had a new rear body that allowed the hood to be completely stowed away behind the rear seat. Production ended in August 1970 when Reliant, which had acquired Bond in 1969, closed the factory.
Of the 841 mark II cars built there is no record of how many were Coupes or Convertibles, it is estimated that about half were Convertibles.
This example has unknown history, in 2012 a Mr Hind took it to High Flags Garage in Hull for a full respray after the body work had been repaired and never paid for the work. After four years they legally took possession of the vehicle and sold it to our vendor in 2016 who had intended to finish the rebuild. Other projects have taken over so he is now selling the project on. It comes as seen, with a hood frame and quarter light frames but nothing else internally. Most of these are Vitesse based, but in period several were bespoke to the Bond, such as the steering wheel and central consul.
Our vendor has been in correspondence with DVLA who have issued a new VIN number and who will issue an age related registration number once a MOT is obtained. Sold with this paperwork and a dating certificate from the Triumph Sports Six Club.
