A nameplate COCHRANES No 1. The origin of this plate is uncertain. Cochrane's Ironworks at Middlesbrough had locomotives named COCHRANES No 4 and COCHRANES No 6 and the plates on the latter were of a similar pattern to this example with scalloped corners. There is however no record of a COCHRANES No 1 at this works, although the company did operate self-propelled steam cranes and it could be from one of these. Cast brass, 30¾"x5¾", the front repainted. (Postage Band: D)
