Negatives – A huge collection of black & white, celluloid negatives taken between 1928 and 1982 by James G. Combes (1913-1998).

A wonderful archive of around 3,500 original images housed in nine archival quality sleeved binders, include subjects as diverse as a formation of airborne bomber aircraft taken in 1938, motorcycle racing at Cadwell Park the following year, a railway station at Ghelum, North Punjab in 1943, a rare photographic image of ‘Teapot Hall’ in the Lincolnshire village of Dalderby taken sometime before it was destroyed by fire in 1945, the beautiful stone gargoyles on the roof of Notre Dame cathedral in Paris in 1949, bomb damage in 1950s London, a fatal road accident on the Riseholme Road in 1957, and a rail crash in Lincoln in May 1962 and the villages of Ashopton and Derwent before they were ‘drowned’ in the 1940s. Altogether, a magnificent, massive, eclectic mix of subjects in images captured around Lincolnshire, the UK, Europe, and northern India/Pakistan over a fifty-year period by an enthusiastic rambler, traveller, and photographer.

This lot includes a box of the original negative containers with notes made by the photographer, and a number of black and white prints also made by Mr Combes. The collection has been partially catalogued and comes with a spreadsheet, saved on a USB memory card, of captions and descriptions, together with scans of the majority of the negatives.
