A FIVE CLASP MILITARY GENERAL SERVICE MEDAL TO THE 57 REGIMENT OF FOOT. A Military General Service Medal 1793-1814 with clasps for Vittoria, Pyrenees, Nivelle, Nive and Toulouse. Named to B. Charlton 57th Foot. Bonner Charlton was born at Tanfields near Newcastle in County Durham in 1789. He enlisted in the 57th Regiment of Foot at Durham on the 18th January 1811 at the age of 22. A cordwainer prior to enlisting he was 5'9" with grey hair, grey eyes and a dark complexion. All five clasps are confirmed to the roll. Wounded in action in the left heel on the Heights of Mayo on the 10th November 1813. Discharged on the 30th October 1824 due to 'Rheumatic Affection' the description of his poor health read 'I certify that Private Bonner Charles is unfit for service having been subject to pains of his arms and loins and limbs and also chronic cough from exposure to wet and cold when patrolling with the detachment in the neighbourhood of Castleisland in Ireland about twelve months back. He was also wounded in the left heel as stated on the other side, his conduct was 'Good'. Mounted for display with copied research.
