* The sitter was the only surviving son of Sir James Porter, British Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire; and of Clarissa Catherine (nee de Hochepied). He had a military career, rising to Colonel of the 103rd Foot (1814-1817).
In February 1802 he married Henrietta Grosvenor, widow of Richard, 1st Earl Grosvenor. He died in Sussex without issue and was succeeded in the barony by his nephew.
An attribution to Raeburn's pupil John Syme RSA (1795-1861) is possible.
