After Thomas Bewick (British, 1753-1828) The Chillingham Bull Engraving 19 x 24.5cm Label 'Thomas Bewick Engraver Newcastle' on the backing. This is a late 19th Century impression (after 1877) The Chillingham Bull is one of Bewick's most known works. It was commissioned by Marmaduke Tunstall, a Yorkshire naturalist, in 1789. The artist's block was accidentally cracked by sunlight and consequently there are very few impressions of it in its original state. Bewick walked forty-eight miles to Chillingham in Northumberland in order to make sketches for the commission. The King bull was too dangerous to approach so Bewick made his drawings from the dethroned bull which was separated from the rest of the cattle. The wild white Chillingham herd which was formerly roamed the great border forests is unique. For seven hundred years it has remained in Chillingham Park and it is of great scientific interest because of its intense in-breeding.
