£2,000
Charles I (1625-1649), AR Sixpence, Aberystwyth mint, mm: open book, struck 1638/9-1642. Crowned bust left; plumes to left, VI to right, rev. Plumes over royal arms in round shield. 2.97g. (Morrieson, Aberystwyth A-1; Brooker 759; N 2333; S 2886). Approaching Extremely Fine, well struck and very attractively toned – an earlier strike than the Cope example and does not exhibit die flaw in obv. legend. Flan a little uneven. Rare. Old ticket marked ‘ex Ryan’ (Glendinings 24 January 1952) lot 1351 – but as this is a Charles II lot it is possibly lot 1147 (2x sixpences and 2x groats of Chas. I) which was bought by Baldwins for £9.
