Attributed to Henry Hoppner Meyer (British, 1780-1847) Portrait of a child in a wooded landscape Standing full-length, wearing a white gown and bloomers the reverse of the canvas bearing inscription Painted by H. Meyer Jun'r, Feb'y 1827 oil on canvas 38 x 29cm The artist 'H. Meyer Junior' named on the reverse of the canvas likely refers to Henry Hoppner Meyer, younger cousin of the renowned portrait artist John Hoppner, whose influence is evident in the present picture. The child's pose and free handling of the landscape are especially reminiscent of John Hoppner's circa 1800 portrait of Miss Harriet Cholmondley, in the Tate collection. While Henry Hoppner Meyer was known primarily as an engraver, he was in fact a prolific portrait painter, exhibiting numerous portraits in oil at the Royal Society of British Artists (an organisation of which he was a founding member), as well as the Royal Academy during the 1820s. Meyer's best-known work in oil, a portrait of a Young Catechist at Bristol Art Gallery, also features a young girl whose features show similarities to the girl in the present portrait.
