A Vic 1845 pattern infantry officer’s sword with patent hilt, very slightly curved fullered blade 32½”, by Phillips & Co, 13 George St, Hanover Sqr, London, no 2690 on backstrap, etched on both sides with crowned VR cypher in foliate, fenestrated panels, with scroll “Patent Solid Hilt” on one side and owner’s monogram “JJM” in scrolls on the other, regulation triple bar brass hilt incorporating crowned VR cypher, stepped pommel and foliate panels to top of backstrap, chequered grip, in its steel scabbard (surface rust) with 2 rings. GC, the hilt retaining traces of gilt. Plate 5
