British Boer War and WWI Royal Navy Medal Group of four to a Harry Stock Able Seaman. H.M.S Doris, then later in WWI 191682, H. Stock L.S R.N. Including Queen’s South Africa Medal with Cape Colony Clasp, 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal and Victory Medal. With his Certificates of Service listing his long career in the Navy serving on many ships including HMS Impregnable, HMS Pembroke, HMS Champion, HMS Wildfire, HMS Doris etc., also with his Gunnery certificate of service in the Royal Navy Brigade during the Boer war, of which only 50 were presented to the men of Royal Navy Brigade. Noted his certificates had been damaged by either fire or water during his service on one of the many ships he crewed, and with a framed picture of Harry Stock. He was one of the blue jackets that helped haul the two guns ashore from the ships in support of the land forces that were 12-pounder 8-cwt. Guns which had been mounted on ordinary field mountings. His mention in the QSA medal rolls QSA (1) CC. Ref: 198.682. "The term Naval Brigade is defined as being a body of sailors who serve in combat on the ground to augment land forces. Prior to major uniform changes which took place around 1890. British sailors were issued with blue jackets hence the nickname "Bluejackets"". HMS Doris was the flagship of Vice-Admiral Sir Robert Harris when he was Commander-in-Chief, Cape of Good Hope Station in South Africa 1898-1900.[1] In 1899 at least one of HMS Doris's QF 4.7-inch (120 mm) guns was mounted on an improvised field carriage and used as a field gun in the Second Boer War. The gun used at Magersfontein was known as Joe Chamberlain. Text from "Naval Brigades in the South African War" Accounts by various officers edited by Surgeon Thomas Tendron Jeans"Despite the fact that so much has already been written on the subject, I feel assured that this little contribution to the history of the struggle in South Africa needs neither explanation nor excuse. It is the story of how, at a time when their comrades of the land service were in dire need of help, British seamen hastened to place their ships' guns on improvised carriages, took them ashore, and in the nick of time enabled our military forces to cope on equal terms with the Boer artillery.” A scarce framed medal group with a great deal of history.
