2011 De Trafford Chenin Blanc (750ml) x 2 bottles - Provenance: Restaurant Mosaic Wine Cellar Collection

More Information

Wedged between the Stellenbosch and Helderberg mountains, situated on the beautiful Mont Fleur farm, is the boutique De Trafford winery. The Trafford family purchased the land in 1976 and a small vineyard was in place by 1983. Launched as early as 1995, at a time when high-end barrel fermented Chenin Blanc was almost unheard of, the Chenin is (like all the wines from this boutique property) hand picked and pressed in the famous basket press, fermented with natural yeasts, and bottled unfiltered. The growing season was cool with some regular rainfall, which made up for the drier winter. Flowering was good and although December was very windy (most in 42 years), producing a normal, healthy crop of very good quality. The beautiful label is of a painting by David's wife, Rita Trafford titled: ‘Hurry up and paint’, inspired by an anxious husband waiting for the label painting. Grapes lightly crushed and allowed 3 hours skin contact before gently pressing in a traditional basket press. Sulphur added and natural settling allowed for 2 days before 100 % barrel fermentation with natural yeasts. All the wine was kept in 225L and a few 700L casks for 9 months with lees stirred 1 – 2 times a month initially. Lightly fined with bentonite – a natural clay. 16% new French oak used. No malolactic fermentation. 92 points from Wine Spectator
