Ida Bagus Tilem. Indonesian, 1936-1993, carved wood figure. Inscribed on base 'IDA BAGUS TILEM MAS BALI', height 16.5cm, width 11cm, depth 7.5cm. Ida Bagus Tantra is from Mas, Bali, a village known for its part in the development of modern Indonesian wood carving. He is one of the four sons of Ida Bagus Njana who, after working in the traditional detailed Balinese wood style, became an innovator of the new school of Balinese wood carving which emerged in the early 1950s. Acquired in Bali in the 1960's/70's and inherited by the present West Cornwall vendors.
