A FAMILY GROUP OF BOER WAR/FIRST WORLD WAR AND FIRST WORLD WAR MEDALS TO A FATHER AND SON. A group of four comprising Queen's South Africa medal with Relief of Kimberley, Paardeberg and Driefontein clasps, named to 73296 DvrT. Simmons 76th Bty RFA, 1914-15 Star named to 41131 Dvr T. Simmons R.F.A. War Medal and Victory Medals similarly named. Mounted as worn, Queen's South Africa officially renamed. A First World War group of three comprising 1914-15 Star named to 39295 Dvr T.J. Simmons R.F.A. War Medal and Victory Medals similarly named to the R.A. Mounted as worn. The two sets with a Royal Artillery cap badge. Thomas Simmons attested for the Royal Artillery at Preston on the 9th May 1889, at the time he lived at Kensal Green in London and is recorded as working as a Cook. He married Caroline Still in 1897 and their son Thomas James was born the following year. The medal roll for the 76th Battery Field Artillery confirms the three clasps to 73296 Simmonds (note different spelling of his name although numbers match). He is noted on the roll as having been invalided to England, had he not been he may well have gone on to be awarded clasps for Johanessburg, Diamond Hill and Wittebergen as so many of his colleagues with this battery were. He reenlisted at Newcastle on Tyne to complete 21 years service, he was discharged on the 6th May 1910. The 1911 census lists his wife and son, now 13 years old, living in Kensal Green. He re-enlisted for the Royal Artillery on the 15th October 1914 with the number 41131, travelling to France on the 13th July 1915. His son Thomas James also a Driver with the Royal Field Artillery arrived in France on the same date.
