Johan Laurentz Jensen (Danish, 1800-1856) Still life of roses, lilies, morning glories and honeysuckle signed J. L. Jensen lower centre oil on canvas 61 x 47cm Provenance: Given to the present owner's grandmother in Denmark, thence by family descent The stretcher bearing a pencil inscription in Danish, addressed to 'Maria' and dated 1932. Often referred to as the 'Father of Danish flower painting', Johan Laurentz Jensen first studied under Christoffer Wilhelm Eckersberg at the Royal Danish Academy, enrolling at the age of just fourteen. Later, having been awarded a grant by Crown Prince Christian Frederick, later King Christian XVII of Denmark, he travelled to Paris. There he further honed his characteristically meticulous, refined technique, working with the Flemish Van Spaendonck brothers, and also at the renowned porcelain factory of Sèvres. During the 1830s, while living in Rome, he met the Danish Neoclassical sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen, who acquired several flower still lifes by Jensen, now on display at Thorvaldsens Museum. A still life similar to the present lot, also foregrounding Jensen's distinctive, luminous roses, is in the collection of the Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen.
