AN 18TH CENTURY FRENCH CARVED COQUILLA NUT SNUFF BOX decorated with a central sailor seated drinking, beside two other figures, the underside carved with flowers. 8.5 cm x 4.5 cm. Note: Snuff Boxes were used for containing snuff, a mixture of ground tobacco and scented oils, and were very popular in the 18th century when snuff-taking was fashionable. Highly decorated and valuable objects, they became collectors' items in the 19th century.
