Textiles: 1920s Batik Sarong on cotton, made using the Sogan method of Central Java Indigo decorated with a continuous pattern of flowers using Soga dyes. 91ins.
"These Batiks from what was Batavia, Indonesia were presented to an American Company Executive on his departure. They were left to his son and then given to me, a lecturer in Indonesian Textiles on The Island Explorer a very large catamaran that sailed the islands of East Nusa Tenggara in the 1990s. The islands had a very poor infra structure and the Emmets were passengers on the boat when they heard their nephew had been killed in Florida. I was able to assist them with going back to America as I spoke Indonesian and I expect these Batiks were a thank you. They also thought I would appreciate them more than they could.
They were presented to him in the 1920s and given to me in late the late 1990s.
Cotton worked with vegetable dyes. Indigo for the blue and Morinda Citifolio for red."
