A large and rare 19thC or early 20thC Balinese, Indonesian embroidered Ider Ider narrative temple hanging, with a scene probably from the Indian Sanksrit epic poem 'Mahabharata' featuring Bima (or Bhima) holding a club, with a wealth of additional detail including a dog, a building, flowers, butterflies, trees and a fish pond, professionally mounted, framed and glazed with Perspex in a light wood box frame by the Kinming Glass & Frame Co., Hong Kong, approx 173cm long, 27cm high excluding tassles, frame 193.5cm wide, 49cm high.

FOOTNOTE: Ider Ider are usually painted onto cloth, not woven and embroidered as with this example. Embroidery was not only more time-consuming to create, but it also required great skill. They tell stories from Hindu religious texts and epics and were hung under the eaves of temple or palace pavilions - the story was then 'read' as one passed by the sequence of scenes, almost like a comic strip. Bima/Bhima was the second of the five sons of Pandu, the Kuru king, and Kunti. The Mahabharata narrates the struggle between two groups of cousins, and tells stories relating to Bima/Bhima and his might. It also contains philosophical and devotional material, such as the discussion of the four 'goals of life'. Highly decorative and ready to hang on a wall.

More Information

Condition: Faded and worn consistent with age, use and display, and lacking some of the hanging tassles. Losses to some of the embroidered threads, particularly on the band of triangles at the top. Frame with some scuffing and dents to corners. Highly decorative and ready to hang.
