Baldwin, Stanley (1867-1947) An a/l, 2pp, 8vo, to Douglas Hogg, dated 3rd June, 1935, - ‘’My dear Douglas, I am now in a position to ask if you accept once more the office of Lord Chancellor. It would give me the greatest personal pleasure to see you occupying that great position-but that is a small matter.
What matters is that it would be a good thing for the office itself and your presence there will be of high value to the State.
If you could reply without undue delay I should be grateful as the King is anxious to see a list of the Cabinet as soon as it can be arranged.
Yours very sincerely, Stanley Baldwin; another, 4pp, 8vo, from 10 Downing Street, dated 27th Oct. 1936, ‘’My Dear Douglas, Silence has not meant forgetfulness!….is for you to get well, whether slowly or quickly is immaterial, provided you don’t dream of coming back to work ‘til you are quite well and strong…..This is a real trial for you, my dear man, but I know you will face up to it. You have the warmest sympathy of all your colleagues and that’s worth something. Yours ever S.B’’ (2)
