A private collection of works by John Shapland, including contents of the artist's studio Sometimes referred to as 'Exeter's lost artist', John Shapland was Principal of the Exeter School of Art from 1899-1913 and is best-known for views of the city, as well as Dartmoor and other West Country scenes. An oil on board of Exeter Quay by Shapland is in the collection of the Royal Albert Museum. The present collection of works and possessions from the artist's studio serves to paint a broader picture of the artist, whose skill was not confined to watercolour and oil, but also to plaster designs for historic properties such as Killerton House, and even photography. A successful entrepeneur, Shapland invented a photographic technique called the 'Russell' brunotype, which involved the creation of glass negatives from sketches. Many of those distinctive landscapes, executed in grisaille, will be offered here.
