A Victorian Admiralty White Ensign by Ratesy of Cowes with armorial to canton for 'The Great Seal of the Supreme Admiralty of England': St George's Cross with ship within a shield cartouche and legend beneath, stamped 'Ratsey Maker Cowes' to header. 145 x 315cm (some wear and small holes) * Notes- George Rogers Ratsey established 'Ratsey Sailmakers' in Cowes in 1790 and made sails for HMS Victory around 1800. Producing sails for British America's Cup challengers thoughout the 19th century, in 1889 the Firm of Ratsey of Cowes and Lapthorn of Gosport merged to become Ratsey & Lapthorn Ltd. The company continued to make sails for both British and American Challenge cup yachts throughout the 20th century and still produces sails in Cowes.
