EAGLE (BRITISH NAVAL BLOCKADE); May/June 1845 + 24 May 1847 fine ELs (both with full typed transcripts) from Royal Marine John Gorham on "HMS Eagle" off Montevideo during the Uruguayan Civil War (part of the Anglo-French Naval Blockade in support of the Colorado Party) to GB via France or Belgium charged "1/3" (French 2-ring "OUTRE MER/L'ORIENT" cds on front) or "2/2" (fine red boxed "PAYS D'OUTREMER" with matching Antwerp cds); good contents inc. (1845) "We hear and see heavy guns firing at intervals on shore, but as affairs are managed at present, Montevideo pay be besieged for a century...There is a cricket club established in the squadron..."! Plus (1847); "...[drawing of the coast and Rat Island] The Blanco horsemen would occasionally ride round the foot of the hill and murder everyone they came across... but since the armistice we can venture there...
