Giosafat Barbaro (1413-1494) was a member of the Venetian Barbaro family. He was a diplomat, merchant and explorer and unusually well-travelled for someone of his times. In 1472 he became Ambassador to Persia, later writing an account of his travels, demonstrating great sensitivity and observational skill. This work was first published in Venice by Aldus in 1543.
