A GEORGE III SILVER AND MOTHER-OF-PEARL SNUFF OR TOBACCO BOX

unmarked, c.1785, plain circular form with reeded borders, the pull-off cover and base both inset with a circular panel, carved in low relief with two mounted pilgrims (possibly two characters from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales), bordered by the inscriptions In remembrance of happy day Septr. 8th and The Gift of Berrington Marsh Esq., to Jas. Stratten Esq. Feby. 1786. 10cm diameter, 5.2 troy ounces gross



A Berrington Marsh, son of John and Ann Marsh, was baptised on 25 May 1755 in the church of St. Mary Somerset, City of London. He was made a Freeman of the City of London on 14 May 1776 and married Martha Griffin at St. James, Clerkenwell, on 22 August 1778. He is further recorded as owning property in the Mile End Old Town, Stepney area of East London between 1787 and 1798.
