WW2 1939-1945, Air Crew Europe Stars, Defence Medal and BWM attributed to Pilot Officer John Sutton mint. He was killed in action piloting a Lancaster with No 622 Sqn on a raid to Nurnberg on 31st March 1944 and is buried in Rheinberg War Cemetery. He was shot down by the night fighter ace Martin "Tino" Becker of 2/NJG 6, who was credited with shooting down 7 bombers that night.
Sold with original Air Ministry box of transmission addressed to Mr E. Sutton, Newport, Isle of Wight, Air Council condolence transmittal slip named to Pilot Officer J. Sutton, RAF blue slip indicating 4 medals issued, 2 RAF pilot's log books, 3 photos in uniform, 6 early photos of his grave/cemetery marked with cross and 2 more modern photos, 622 Sqn letter dated 31 March 1944 stating he had not returned from a raid, Air Ministry letters confirming death dated 28/11/44, and various letters regarding burial site, typed research etc.
From his log books the first recorded flight 28/1/42, first solo 26/5/42, joined 1657 Conversion Unit 4/10/43, posted to 622 Sqn, Mildenhall flying Stirlings, 1st Op 18/11/43 to Mannheim, converted to Lancaster by Jan 1944, further Ops to Berlin (6), Schweinfurt, Augsburg etc. (See photo) (½B)
