± Exhibition Hall Letters A remarkable archive of letters from children evacuated during the war to their previous teacher, Miss Gay. Mrs Gay continued to live and work in Bristol while most of her pupils were evacuated. Consisting of nineteen letters back to their former teacher, each detailing their new lives in the countryside, many discussing serious events such as air raids, with others light-hearted, with one discussing the Cornish dialect, ‘All of the children here have been calling us Bristol Bombers, but it’s starting to wear off now. The Cornish people call potatoes taddies and instead of saying ‘Why aren’t you coming out’ they say ‘How aren’t you coming out’. Also they call you ‘my biddy’.’ Each letter mounted within a display, together with a metal sign, newspaper articles linked to the story and three poems related to evacuees. - This lot will be subject to an additional VAT charge of 20% on the hammer price
