RARE JACOBITE MEDAL - THE TWO PRINCES, CHARLES & HENRY, copper medal, c1737, by Erminegildo Hamerani, signed with the wolf and twins of the Rome Mint, armoured and draped bust of Prince Charles right, HVNC SALTEM EVERSO IVVENEM (At least permit this youth to repair the ruins of the age; after Virgil), reverse: bust of Prince Henry to right, TRIPLICIS SPES TERTIA GENTIS (The third hope of a triple Nation), 45mm (Woolf 47.1; MI 493/35; Cochran-Patrick pl. XIII, 6), a choice medal, extremely fine & rare. This medal is thought to have been struck either on the completion of the Prince's Grand Tour (late summer 1737) or on the occasion of 17th birthday, when it could have served to mark both events. The cataloguers can only find a single specimen sold within the last 20 years and that in silver.
