CHINESE SILK EMBROIDERED JACKET & CHINESE SILK EMBROIDERED ROBE
a 19thc dark blue silk front fastening Chinese jacket with a pale blue silk lining. The collar and hem are decorated with a closely worked embroidered design of foliage and flowers. The sleevebands are embroidered with butterflies and flowers onto pale blue silk. The fabric of the jacket is decorated on the front and back with flowers and butterflies worked in silks and couched gold thread (94cms high). Also with a late 19thc Chinese grey unlined silk robe, decorated with embroidered flowers worked in colourful silks, some damage to the silk cuffs and the collar has been altered (96cms high)
*These items were almost certainly brought back by Sir Thomas Hanbury (1832-1907), an English businessman, gardener and philanthropist from Shanghai.
