£400 - £450
A medal to the Central Africa Regiment for the Ashanti campaign 1900 (the 'Golden Stool' War), with clasp 'Kumasssi' named to: 805 Pte Chibwana 2 nd C Africa
Regt.
After the expedition of 1895-96, a tense peace had existed between the British and the Ashanti. The 'Golden Stool' was regarded by the Ashanti as the icon of their
nation and a rallying point for discontent and so the Governor, Sir Frederick Hodgson, sent a small force in March 1900 to confiscate the stool from the Ashanti.
This led to a general insurrection, with considerable fighting and casualties on both sides until the Ashanti finally surrendered in December 1900. Because the Boer War was at its height at this time, no European troops could be spared for this campaign.
However, 131 European officers and 80 NCOs were involved who, together with some 4000 African other ranks, received the silver medal. Half a battalion each of
the 1 and 2 Central Africa Regiments (later the King’s African Rifles took part. Two Victoria Crosses and Twelve Distinguished Conduct Medals were awarded for the
campaign and the British forces suffered nearly one thousand casualties.
This is an example of the 'high relief effigy' version of this medal. Generally Very Fine (VF) condition.
