An interesting mid to late 18th century carved and pierced bone fan with double paper leaf, intricately découpé, printed and hand-coloured, the scene showing Zélime who has been captured, to be sold by a slave trader, atop a stone pedestal, her high hairstyle surmounted by a ship or similar unlikely object, typical of the day, whilst other ladies observe, to the left, two winged cherubs holding a scroll with the words “La Caravanne du Caire”, which refers to the opéra or opéra-ballet by André Grétry, first performed in 1783, guard approx. 26.5cm
Used, with some nicks and losses to the upper folds.
