Margaret Helen KNAPPING WIAC (?-1935) St. Ives Harbour Oil on board, Signed 24 x 33cm Margaret Helen Knapping whose birth date is unknown, was largely a landscape painter, often drawing inspiration from her surroundings in the Cornish town of St. Ives. Although relatively quiet in terms of notability through exhibiting work, Knapping helped shape the art scene of St. Ives into the cacophony of creativity that we know it as today. After fellow artist William Titcomb left St. Ives in 1905, Knapping took over his Piazza studio in the same year, and in 1920 purchased the entire building. A founding member of the St. Ives Society of Artists, Knapping was a respected part of the community until her death in 1935. After her death, Knapping passed on the Piazza studios to the Royal Society of British Artists, with hopes that they would remain as artists' studios.
