** ASHBY DE LA ZOUCH (LEICS.) - UNDERPAID COVER EX LONDON TO IRISH PAROLE P.O.W. WHO LATER ABSCONDED; 10 Oct. 1809 E from London (boxed "Fitzroy/Square" on flap) to "Mr Joseph Donald O'Gorman, Officer of the Administration, Prisoner of War, on Parole, Ashby De La Zouch" prepaid 9d with ed London "PAID" cds on the front but found to be a 2-sheet letter and so with faint black London boxed "MORE TO PAY" on the front and "9d" charge with PO Inspector's initials alongside (small m/s "9½" alongside - unofficial extra local ½d rate). O'Gorman had a chequered career as a POW; he is recorded in the Ashby POW ledgers (copy of page included) as having been captured at the end of the Siege of Flushing (Vlissingen) on 15 Aug. 1809, but also notes that he "Ran" on 10 Sept. 1810 and was "retaken" on 24 Oct. 1810 at Chatham Docks.
