A JAPANESE BRONZE FIGURE OF PRINCE SHŌTOKU, ISHIKAWA MITSUAKI, 19/20TH CENTURY. Modelled holding a temple incense burner by Ishikawa Mitsuaki (1852-1913) with seal mark. Comes in an inscribed wooden box. Measures 33cm high x 13cm wide x 9cm deep. Weight 3kg.

Ishikawa Mitsuaki studied Kano School painting and sculpture under his father, a wood carver who worked for the Shogunate. He created various carved interior decorations at the Imperial Palace, and received many prizes in international and domestic exhibitions with works in ivory and wood. He was hired by the Tokyo Fine Arts School in 1890, and was appointed Imperial Artist the same year. He remained a professor of the Tokyo Fine Arts School until his death in 1913.
