A SUPERB GEORGE II IRISH CIRCULAR PEDESTAL BOWL.
6.5ins diameter x 3.5ins high with crest*.
Dublin 1731. Maker William Clarke. Weight 13ozs.
Scratch weight on base 13.18.
*Arms of Stone, with various branches (with minor differences) in London and Oxfordshire. In 1713 almost identical arms and crest were granted to Dr Richard Stone of Dublin, a Master in Chancery.
The coat 'in pretence' [the small escutcheon in the centre, indicating marriage to an heiress] bears either the arms of Verney of Middle Clayton, Buckinghamshire, or of the family of Warme/Worme of Peterborough, or possibly of Rich.
It is not known who Dr Richard Stone of Dublin married, but with a Dublin hallmark this bowl may have been made for him.
