1986 Austin Mini Mayfair Automatic, 998 cc. Registration number D251 GWW. Chassis number SAXXL2S1N20318004. Engine number 99HB82P0102677.
Launched in 1959, the Alec Issigonis-designed Mini introduced a whole new concept in car design. Its space-saving front-wheel-drive layout and ingenious transverse engine allowed 80% of the area of the car's floorpan to be used for passengers and luggage and influenced a generation of car makers. Throw in a cute little monocoque body and go-kart like handling that made 30mph feel like 60mph and Issigonis was on to a winner.
Perfectly timed to capture the revolutionary feel of the time, the Mini instantly epitomised the mood of the Swinging Sixties. Crashing through the traditional class barriers that had surrounded British cars up to that point, everybody wanted to be seen in a Mini. No wonder the fundamental shape remained unaltered for an incredible 40 years.
The Mark IV version of the Classic Mini was introduced in 1976, with many limited edition models including the Mayfair which ran from 1982 - 1996.
Having spent its entire life in Yorkshire, with Mrs Farquhar of Leeds, the Mini changed hands for the first time in 2013, heading to an elderly retired gentleman, Jack Fox, in North London. The car only spent 18 months in the Capital, covering in the region of 500 miles and being treated to over £1000 work to include new engine mountings, new front brake discs and pads, new front calipers, flexi hoses, inner and outer CV boots, new radiator, stabiliser bushes, shock absorbers, steering rack boots, track rod ends and full service to include new HT leads and distributor cap. The next owner Ralph Magee was from York in 2016 and our vendor acquired it in 2017.
D251 GWW presents well, still retains its original dealer sticker and totally original brown velour interior which is in good condition. The well resprayed Metallic Gold paintwork has had additional Gucci stickers added, finding a similar, automatic example with low ownership, low mileage and so much originality could prove very difficult.
Sold with the V5C, the Appleyards dealer booklet, various MOT's back to 2007, and a Classic Car Buyer review of the car whilst it was in the stock of Malton Classic & Sports Car Centre, priced at £5995, the mileage was 20,700, today it is 21,250.
