Idylls of Theocritus Ancient Greek Poetry Latin & Greek Scaliger. Oxford, 1699, 1st edition. Theocritus was a 3rd-century BC Greek poet best known for writing pastoral poems. In fact, his Idylls are considered to be the first pastoral poems. This particular edition is considerably noteworthy – it features both Latin and original Greek texts with translations and annotated notes by Joseph Scaliger, Isaac Casaubon, and Daniel Heinsius. Contemporary full calf, blind-stamp detail. Octavo 8vo.
