A RARE AND UNIQUE LATE ELIZABETHAN - JAMES I OAK AND POLYCHROME, SLOPED BACK ENCLOSED ARMCHAIR, DERBYSHIRE, CIRCA 1590-1610. The steeply sloped back with panelled, winged sides having applied split turnings all topped by ball turned finials, the interior wings flanking a top rail carved with vertical S scrolled interlace above a broad single panel with applied arcade carved with gouging and leafy quadrant corners, resting on moulded capitals around a centre arched plaque, relief carved with owner initial T F within a cusped border and matted ground and small pendant drop, the panelled sides with flat, scroll shaped arms terminated in out turned cusps above two original small retaining pegs, above a multi plank seat with moulded rails and deep silhouette foot board joined by moulded uprights. The sides with heavy applied mouldings and further moulded rails and stretchers. The back having historic iron bracing to the upper frame and retaining substantial red polychrome decoration 110cm high 75cm deep approx 70cm wide.
The armchair is of a very unusual style and format, a fixed back reclining chair of a size that could easily accommodate extra padded support. It retains a remarkable colour and surface with untouched craqueleur patination. Where generations of radiated heat having affected the sides, causing a degradation of later over finishes to reveal the original red polychrome beneath. This is viewable on closer inspection all the chair, the monogrammed plaque with visible remainder of polychrome easily seen.
