A Victorian electro type 'Milton Shield' design by Morel Ladeuil by Elkington & Co, circa 1866, worked in relief with panels of classical style figures, centred by a circular panel in high relief with the archangel Raphael and Adam and Eve, signed in script lower left Morel Ladeuil Fecit 1866 and lower right Elkington & Co, 86x65cms, (33.5x25.5ins.) mounted in a red velvet frame The original copy of this shield was manufactured for the 1867 Paris Exhibition by Messrs. Elkington and received a gold medal. The panels depicting subjects from Milton's 'Paradise Lost', sixth book, the hosts of Heaven attacking the rebels who are driven out and fall to perdition, St. Michael waving his flaming sword over the dragon who appears in human form, Sin and Death appearing either side at the base, the border with Zodiac signs symbolising the rolling year and flight of Time, the upper part of the shield depicting angels and seraphs soaring high above the strife below flanking the emblem of all Light and Life and encircled by winged cherub's heads, the interior with applied oval plaque of the Victoria & Albert Department of Sciences & Art
