Bodley Foundry, Exeter. A collection of twenty two wooden gear patterns of various sizes, each stamped with a factory pattern number. Note - In 1790 George Bodley set up an iron foundry initially in the Westgate Quarter and subsequently at Quay Place, City Road Exeter (now known as Commercial Road) George Bodley's son Alfred (b.1791) continued to run the foundry into the 19th century when it was taken over by Alfred's son (also Alfred, b.1826). The foundry continued production under family ownership until 1967. Much of the original machinery which was over 100 years old was sent to the Science Museum, Kensington. These wooden 'patterns' were made and used as the templates for the sand casting of iron machine components.
