Sale Description:
An Important Sale of Original Paintings 2003-2018 From the Studio of Alex Williams
Educated at Central Saint Martin’s School of Art in London, Alex Williams first came to Wales in the 1960s when he fell in love with a fellow art student, Valmai Davies, whose family owned The Honey Café in Bronllys, Brecon. While recovering from a car accident there, Alex started painting what was to become his core subject: local farms. He found inspiration in tractors, corrugated iron sheds and in particular, farm animals. His works capture the dignity and vulnerability of animals great and small, and he feels they have much to teach us.
Alex is a versatile artist who has painted many other subjects. but he has returned to farms and particularly Welsh farms, again and again. When asked why, he replies that everything can be found in a farmyard: life, death, engineering, management, architecture, breeding, feeding, the changing seasons, and that the fascination never runs out.
His farm animals are also to be found on tableware, china, prints and cards. Many of the products in the Alex Williams Collection have become highly sought- after collectors’ items, and his fine bone china mugs and plaques are currently on view at the Alex Williams Exhibition at Y Gaer, Brecon, along with a selection of his paintings.
Most of the pictures on sale relate to the farming heritage of the Brecon area and provide a unique, painterly record of the often struggling and rundown farms, complete with all their mud and rusting machinery. This auction provides a unique opportunity to access Alex’s store of pictures from many past exhibitions.
The works are all oil paintings, mostly framed and of various sizes. Alex, who will be 80 this year, says: ‘I now want to sell everything in storage, with some of the proceeds going to the UNICEF Emergency Fund Ukraine.’ He has exhibited all over the world, and his paintings of Welsh farms and animals were particularly popular in Hollywood, where he lived for a time. Alex now exhibits mainly at The Fosse Gallery, Stow on the Wold, and he has lived on the Isle of Wight for 10 years with his second wife Celia, also a local Welsh girl. He continues to paint every day in his specially-built studio there, but says that Wales, and the subject matter it gave him, will always hold a special place in his heart.
