China

China’s incredibly long and storied history, spanning well over 4000 years, has given rise to a vast array of antiques, each with its own unique cultural significance from different eras and regions. From the delicate boon of Ming Dynasty sculptures to elaborate Qing era pottery, and much more, antiques hailing from China are highly prized amongst collectors.

Porcelain and Ceramics

One of China’s most famous contributions to the world of antiques is its porcelain. Renowned for its durability and intricate adornments, Chinese porcelain has been highly valued across the globe for centuries. Collectors often seek out blue and white Ming vases, intricately painted plates, and other ceramics that showcase the fastidious nature of the craftsmen of China’s past.

In Ma San Auctions’ 4th October auction, from 10:30am BST, you can find this 19th / 20th century group of Chinese blue and white and crackle ware porcelain sleeve vases. They would make for a gorgeous statement piece.

Jade Carvings

Another significant category in Chinese antiques is jade and jade carvings. Jade has been revered in China for thousands of years, symbolic of purity and wisdom, and is even believed to have talismanic properties that can ward off evil and promote health and good fortune. Historically carved into everything from jewellery to statues, jade pieces are highly collectable and often command high prices at auction.

This green jade Chinese mask will be in Kew Auctions’ 3rd October ‘The Gilded Collection’ sale, starting 2pm BST.

Japan

Japanese antiques are renowned for their serenity and humility, as well as their careful attention to detail. Embedded in a deep respect for nature and tradition, these often reflect the aesthetics of wabi-sabi—the transient beauty in imperfection and impermanence.

Samurai Swords and Armor

Samurai swords, or katana, are among the most popular Japanese antiques. Collectors value them for their historical appeal and the skill required to create them. Similarly, samurai armour, with its intricate designs and materials, is highly sought after by those who appreciate Japan’s warrior culture.

Rob Michiels Auctions’ Fine Asian and European Arts sale features this impressive Edo period (first half 18th century) Japanese samurai armour.
Live auction commences 16th October, 8:30am BST.
