Mark your calendars as Eastbourne Auctions presents the first day of their highly anticipated 4-day sale.
Kicking off next Tuesday, 3rd September from 9:30am BST, this event hosted by Eastbourne Auctions is a real treasure-trove of over 700 carefully curated lots from a single owner, whose passion over the past 40 years has culminated in an extraordinary collection.
The first day promises a remarkable assortment of Arts & Crafts and Decorative Arts, featuring an impressive selection of metalware, furniture, and ceramics.
Eastbourne Auctions’ collection of metalware includes works from some of the most esteemed names in the field. Look forward to items from Newlyn, Liberty’s, Benson, and WMF, along with designs by renowned figures such as Christopher Dresser and John Pearson.
This large Newlyn Arts & Crafts copper mirror decorated with fishermen, fish and luggers, is featured in Eastbourne Auctions’ 3rd September catalogue.
To ensure a consistent stream of income, Newlyn copperware was largely produced by the local fishermen at Newlyn, Cornwall, following a steep decline in productivity during bad weather and seasonal fluctuations.
Originally a metal repair workshop, WMF emerged as the world’s largest producer and exporter of household metalware by 1900.
This WMF pewter maiden claret jug, with green glass liner in Art Nouveau style is a standout Lot in Eastbourne Auctions’ 3rd September catalogue, and would make a beautiful centrepiece adornment.
The ceramics section is equally impressive, with highlights including works from Mintons, Goldscheider, and renowned designers Charlotte and Frederick Rhead. You’ll also find Doulton and Carltonware pieces.
Royal Doulton has maintained its household name as a pioneer in ceramics and home accessories.
This quirky Royal Doulton jug is one for the cat lovers amongst us, with motto 'May we kiss whom we please, and please whom we kiss.'
Austrian Goldschneider Art Nouveau bust of a Pre-Raphaelite maiden, featured in Eastbourne Auctions’ 3rd September sale.
Founded in 1885, Goldschneider ceramics became one of the most influential ceramic manufactories of terracotta, faience and bronze objects in Austria.
Furniture collectors will be delighted by the selection on offer, including pieces made for and retailed at the iconic Liberty’s store in London. Additionally, the collection features Gothic Revival furniture, which have stood the test of time and are still proving popular today.
Popular amongst Victorians, the allure of Gothic Revival furniture peaked between 1840 and 1900. Largely, these pieces were not mass-produced, and are thus long-lasting.
This late Victorian Gothic Revival oak centre table is up for auction in Eastbourne Auctions’ 3rd September sale and would make a grandiose showpiece in any space, especially if paired with a set of ebonised oak chairs.
A distinct Lot on day 1 of Eastbourne Auctions’ 4-day sale is this good Arts & Crafts oak dresser, probably by Shapland & Petter, with foliate inlaid decoration and embossed copper mounts.
Adding to the appeal of the sale are collectables by Crown Devon and Denby, including a unique prototype Zebra that is guaranteed to stir conversation.
This incredibly rare Denby prototype model of a blue striped zebra is Lot 428 in Eastbourne Auctions’ catalogue, and if you’re a collector, it’s a real must-have!
Glassware enthusiasts will also find much to admire, with stunning examples from Galle, Loetz, and the intriguing Vaseline glass, known for its ethereal glow under UV light.
Vaseline glass earned its name due to its resemblance to petroleum jelly. Its distinctive colour, often transparent-yellow or yellow-green, owes its thanks in part to its uranium content. But fear not — Vaseline glass doesn’t tend to exceed 2% uranium content and is perfectly safe to hold and display.
This brass wall light with Vaseline glass shade is one of 33 Vaseline glass lots available in Eastbourne Auctions’ September 3rd sale.
Day one also features a diverse range of lots, including lighting fixtures, fire-screens, coal-boxes, mirrors, gongs, chargers, paintings, and much more. Each item has been the result of 40 years of meticulous cumulating from one owner — a true lifelong collection.
This gorgeous oil-onto-canvas painting of a pre-Raphaelite young woman is Lot 1051 and will also be featured on day 1 of Eastbourne Auctions’ 4-day sale, on 4th September.
Possibly retailed at Liberty’s of London, Eastbourne Auctions’ 3rd September sale includes this Arts & Crafts copper and brass dinner gong with stylised decoration.
This event is an unmissable opportunity to get your hands on some unique items from a collection that has been decades in the making.
