World War I marked a turning point in naval warfare, and submarines like HM E-19 were at the forefront of innovation. As the war continued, serious threat to imports of food and supplies to Britain threatened to take hold. And so, The War at Sea came to fruition, with Britain introducing a convoy system and striking back.
Vessels such as HM E-19 were designed to operate for the war at sea, both on the surface and beneath the waves, and serving aboard them required immense bravery.
Built by Vickers, Barrow-in-Furness, and launched 13th May 1915, HM Submarine E-19 was scuttled in April 1918 at Helsinki, Finland, in order to avoid capture.
This collection is a unique opportunity to connect with the past and honour the memory of a true hero who displayed a wealth of courage during a time of great adversity.
Those who fought at sea were a fundamental part of Britain’s efforts in World War I. Despite the epic scale the war at sea was fought and the tragic human loss, the war at sea can often be overlooked. For collectors and history buffs, this lot offers a rare glimpse into the life-achievements of a man whose story very much deserves to be remembered.
